Alfonso X Biography

Sunday, 24 November 2019

Although a king of Castile, Alfonso X has significant connections to English history. Alfonso was the father of Eleanor of Castile, wife and consort of Edward I. He was also responsible for an alliance with England in 1254 which had implications for Gascony, then a French possession of Henry III. A new biography of this Castillian king by Joseph F. O’Callaghan (Cornell University Press, 2019) is an important new study of the web of connections between the courts of Eurpope and the legal framework in which they operated. English Monarchs readers with interest in the Iberian peninsular will welcome this new book. ‘Alfonso X: the Justinian of his age’, ISBN 9781501735899, was released in May 2019 and sells for £40 or US $50
